This book is part of a trilogy, which is a science fiction, dystopian thriller. Today I will be reviewing the first book of the Divergent Series by Veronica Roth. This book is set around a futuristic society that is divided into five factions that value different human qualities. They are: Abnegation (selflessness), Dauntless (bravery), Candour (honesty), Amity(peace) and Erudite (knowledge). There are people who don’t belong anywhere and are known as factionless. Kids in this society stay with their parents till a certain age. After that they undergo an aptitude test and choose a faction for the later part of their life.

The story is of a young girl Beatrice Prior, who belongs to Abnegation. She is quite different from the rest and finds it difficult to merge with her birth faction unlike her brother Caleb Prior. Her parents work in the government, her father with the ruling party and her mother a social worker.  During the aptitude test she undergoes a virtual simulation to find out her aptitude. To her shock she finds that she is a divergent, with aptitude for Abnegation, Dauntless and Erudite. Her test proctor Tori instructs her to never reveal this information to anyone as it is dangerous and fatal for reasons unknown and not understandable to Beatrice.

The next day during the choosing ceremony Beatrice faces the difficult choice of staying or leaving her faction and by extension her family. Her brother Caleb who she was sure would stay in Abnegation chooses Erudite, a faction that always opposed the Abnegation. When it is her turn, after a moment of uncertainty she chooses Dauntless which is a surprise for everyone there. Post the ceremony she jumps into the running train along with other Dauntless, to reach the dauntless head quarters. She becomes the first initiate to take a leap of faith and jumps through a hole. She changes her name to Tris, thus leaving behind her old identity. She meets Four and Eric, trainers for transfer initiates and the head of the faction respectively. Through the days of training she meets many initiates and trainees, befriends them, performs many feats that surprise her and others, gains enemies and climbs through the list to reach the top rank. Four takes a special liking on her.

Beatrice learns from Tori and Four that the government sees Divergents as threats and eliminates them, as they are different and cannot be mind controlled through simulations. On the meeting day when the transfers get to meet their family, she deduces that her own mother was a Dauntless and came to Abnegation. Her mother hints of an unrest brewing in the society and asks her to reach out to her brother and ask him to research on the simulations. Meanwhile, romance brews between Four and Tris, which is lighthearted and sweet. Also the authorities in Dauntless and Erudite start taking a special interest in Tris due to her simulation aptitude tests. So she has to protect herself and somehow manage to hide her divergence.

Why is Divergence a threat to government? Why are Divergents killed? What is the unrest and who is behind it? Will Beatrice survive being a divergent? Read and find out.

The story has many Ah moments that is both shocking and interesting like the fact that Beatrice’s mother is a Divergent. The romance between Tris and Four is so cute and refreshing and I wound say that their moments were my favourites. There are moments when Four is sweet to Tris when they are alone and strict and ruthless towards her, around others. The way the writer describes Tris’ reactions to the change of behaviour and her emotions is really good and quite relatable. Apart from that the dynamics between different characters is well woven and makes the plot interesting.

Overall this one is a really compelling book, so much that it becomes hard to put it down till you complete it.
