Hey buddies!!!!!
So
welcome back! Once again thank you so much for all your love and support, it
keeps us going. So today I really didn’t know what sort of content you guys
would be expecting, so I thought I will review a book.
This
is one of my most favourites. It is actually a series, a long and seemingly
never ending series… Lol! If you had read my previous entry you might have
already guessed the name of the series. If not am giving a one more easier
clue… its based on Greek Mythology. Yes! Bingo! I’m talking about the Percy
Jackson series. Today I will be reviewing the first book ie. Percy Jackson and
the Lightening Thief.
Just
because it is based on greek myth, it does not mean you should have prior
knowledge of it. Its ok if you don’t, you will still understand the story just
fine. So a brief synopsis of the story based on just the title is as follows:
The lightening bolt which is the weapon of power of Zeus (King of Olympian
gods/greek gods) is stolen. Our hero Percy Jackson has to find and return it.
But trust me the actual plot is not as simple as that!
Our
hero Perseus Jackson is a 12 year old who lives in Manhattan and stays in a
boarding school. All seems well till he goes on a field trip to a museum where
his math teacher becomes a monster, a fury to be exact and attacks him while
accusing him of stealing something. Though he is sure of what he saw, his best
friend Grover Underwood, teacher Mr. Brunner and the entire class and school
deny the happenings. That night he, Percy overhears them talking about protecting
him and the next day, the last day of term, Grover insists on staying with him
till he reaches his home. But Percy ditches him. Back at his home, he is with
his loving mother Sally Jackson and an abusive step-father, Gabe Ugliano.
Sally
and Percy manage to leave for their Montauk beach house for a holiday. But tragedy strikes
there. Percy has bizarre nightmares that night and his friend Grover appears at
the front door urging them to leave the beach house immediately. They take
Percy to a summer camp that his father wanted him to attend. On the way a
minotaur attacks them which only Percy and Grover are able to survive.
Next
day Percy finds himself in the camp. He meets many people like Argus, Annabeth
(daughter of Athena) who gives him a tour of the camp, Clarisse (daughter of
Ares) who tries to bully him but gets splashed with toilet water (read and find
out), Luke (son of Hermes), who welcomes him with open arms, Dionysius the god
of wine and camp director who gets everyone’s name wrong and many others. Also
he comes to know that Grover is a Satyr (a half human and half goat), his
teacher Mr. Brunner is Chiron, a Centaur, the teacher of all the Greek heroes
and that the Greek gods are very much alive and the myths are real. A shocker
for him. For a few days he mingles with the other campers and trains. He gets
along well with Luke, Beckendroff (son of Hephaestus), Annabeth and the lot but
not so well with Clarisse and her siblings. One night during the game of “Capture
the Flag” he gets claimed by his father, Poseidon. Only then does he comes to know
about the fall out among the gods.
Zeus’
symbol of power the lightening bolt is missing. He accuses the son of Poseidon
for the thievery. Percy is given the Summer Solstice as the deadline to return
the lightening bolt. Meanwhile an unknown entity beckons Percy to the
underworld with his mother Sally as the bait. A quest is issued to him with
Grover and Annabeth as his fellow questers and Chiron gives him his weapon the
Riptide a sword concealed as a ball point pen. Luke also gives them a present,
his father Hermes’ magical flying shoe for good luck. In the course of this quest
they face off against many enemies and monsters, meet a few friends and get to
know more about each other. Percy is also accused of stealing Hades’ symbol of
power the Helm of Darkness. Hades also demands that his helm be returned before
the summer solstice. With many twists and turns the questers come to know of
their true and fake friends. Is Percy the real thief? If yes, why? If no, then
who is the thief? Why did they steal the weapon of the gods? Did Percy succeed in
his quest? To know the answers for all these questions read and find out!
For easy understanding I’m
also including a brief description of the gods that I have mentioned above.

and Hera, Brother of Hephaestus.

wisdom, useful crafts, warfare and war strategy, Daughter of Zeus.
